Planning your job in the Inner West
The Inner West has some of Sydney’s oldest housing: Victorian and Federation terraces, semis and cottages around Annandale, Leichhardt, Marrickville and Dulwich Hill, interwar houses further west towards Concord and Burwood, and apartment buildings near the stations and main roads.
Older wiring and renovation plans
Older terraces and cottages often still have original wiring, a small switchboard and few power points, so common jobs are switchboard upgrades with safety switches, rewiring during renovations and extra circuits for kitchens and air conditioning. Many streets are in heritage conservation areas, which can affect where outside lights and cameras can go.
Shops, cafés and offices
Shops, cafés and offices on the main streets can book repairs, lighting and fitout work around their trading hours.
Access and arrangements
We check the existing installation and equipment, and plan related repairs, fittings and upgrades together. Let us know which rooms will be occupied, how tenants can provide access and any business hours to work around.

Your questions
Electrical questions in the Inner West
Many Inner West homes are old terraces and semis. What electrical work do they usually need?
Most Victorian and Federation terraces and semis have had their wiring changed several times over the years, so we start by checking the switchboard, the safety switches and how old the wiring is. Common work includes replacing an old fuse board, adding safety switches and power points, and rewiring circuits through tight ceiling and floor spaces with care for original ceilings and joinery. If you live in a heritage conservation area and want something visible from the street changed, such as moving a meter box, check with Inner West Council first, as it may need approval.
Do you work on Inner West shops and cafés?
Yes. We work on small business premises such as shops, cafés and offices: lighting, repairs, extra circuits for kitchen equipment, data points and switchboard work, planned around your trading hours. We give a free, written quote before any work starts.
How is the price worked out?
The scope, fittings, condition of the existing wiring and access all affect the price. Our cost guides give Sydney market ranges to help you budget; they are not a quote for your property. Xcel Electrical provides a free written quote explaining the agreed work and price before it starts. If testing reveals further work, we explain the options before proceeding.
What access should I arrange for the visit?
Keep the work area and switchboard accessible, tell us about parking or locked gates, and arrange entry to any rooms involved. Mention restricted ceiling or underfloor access when enquiring; you do not need to enter these spaces yourself.
Will the power need to be turned off?
Many electrical jobs require the affected circuit to be isolated while work is carried out. A switchboard job may interrupt power to the whole property. We explain the expected interruption when planning the work. Tell us about medical equipment, refrigeration, business operations or anything else that needs an uninterrupted supply so suitable arrangements can be made.
