Planning your job in Strathfield
Strathfield is known for its large Federation and inter-war houses on wide, tree-lined streets, many of them in heritage conservation areas, while the area around the station and towards Parramatta Road is mostly apartment buildings. The big houses often have long circuit runs, original fittings and switchboards that have been added to over many decades, and owners usually want new work to sit quietly alongside original ceilings, cornices and joinery.
Work around your property
In the apartment buildings, work inside a unit is usually straightforward, while switchboards, car parks and common areas go through the owners corporation. Shops, restaurants and offices around the station can book work outside trading hours. Strathfield is about 9 km from our base in Ryde. Every job starts with a free, written quote, and wiring work comes with a CCEW.
Outdoor cable routes
On larger blocks with established gardens, outdoor lighting and power to sheds, studios or pools need cable routes planned around trees, paths and garden beds.

Your questions
Electrical questions in Strathfield
Our Strathfield house is in a heritage conservation area. Can the meter box be moved off the front wall?
Sometimes, but it’s worth asking whether it needs to move. A new meter position has to meet the network operator’s rules on access, and in a heritage conservation area any new box or conduit visible from the street may need to suit the council’s heritage controls. Often the better answer is to leave the meter where it is and put a modern switchboard inside the house. We explain the options before you decide.
Our large Strathfield house has lots of rooms on a few circuits. Does it need a full rewire?
Not always. We first test the existing cabling: if the insulation is sound, the switchboard can be upgraded and the load spread across new circuits for the kitchen, air conditioning and heavier appliances, leaving the original lighting circuits largely in place. If testing shows old rubber-insulated or damaged cable, those sections should be replaced. The written quote separates what is needed now from what can wait.
How is the price worked out?
The scope, fittings, condition of the existing wiring and access all affect the price. Our cost guides give Sydney market ranges to help you budget; they are not a quote for your property. Xcel Electrical provides a free written quote explaining the agreed work and price before it starts. If testing reveals further work, we explain the options before proceeding.
What access should I arrange for the visit?
Keep the work area and switchboard accessible, tell us about parking or locked gates, and arrange entry to any rooms involved. For an apartment or shared building, also check meter-room access, lift bookings and permitted work hours with the building manager. Confirm approval for work affecting common property.
Will the power need to be turned off?
Many electrical jobs require the affected circuit to be isolated while work is carried out. A switchboard job may interrupt power to the whole property. We explain the expected interruption when planning the work. Tell us about medical equipment, refrigeration, business operations or anything else that needs an uninterrupted supply so suitable arrangements can be made.
