These are planning ranges from published trade sources, not Xcel Electrical prices or a guarantee that every job falls within a range. All amounts are in Australian dollars. Your written quote confirms the scope, equipment, labour, exclusions and GST before work starts.

A practical example
Refreshing a room’s downlights
Count the lights, record the existing cut-out size and decide whether their positions will stay. The $69–$140 each range covers a standard supplied-and-installed light. Ask whether the chosen fitting works with the dimmer and whether the total includes drivers, disposal and any ceiling repairs; a new layout involves different cable work.
An example scope for planning, not a completed Xcel job or a quotation.
What changes the cost?
Replacement or new lighting layout
Replacing a fitting at an existing point differs from cutting new positions and running cables. Include disposal and any ceiling repairs in the comparison.
Controls and outdoor conditions
Dimmers must suit the selected LEDs. Outdoor equipment needs suitable weather protection, cable routes and placement, so an indoor per-light rate is not a garden-lighting quote.
Before you arrange the work
Choose the light before the hole
Consider colour temperature, beam angle, glare and light output. Check the cut-out size and ceiling clearances before ordering downlights.
Outdoor and feature lighting
Plan paths, entrances and areas where light is actually needed. Avoid placing bright fittings where they shine into neighbouring windows or directly into a camera lens.
Sources and how to use these figures
We checked the linked published prices on 21 October 2026. Where a source explicitly excludes GST, the figures here add 10%. Where GST is not stated, the table says so. Some references cover NSW generally or a specific Sydney suburb; their scope is identified below. Any rounding is explained with the source. These are sourced ranges, not a statistically measured market average or a maximum price for complex work.

Common questions
Does the per-light figure include the fitting?
The LED example covers standard supply and installation. Decorative lights and customer-selected fittings must be itemised separately.
Can old dimmers stay with new LEDs?
Sometimes, but compatibility needs checking. Flicker or poor dimming can require a different driver, dimmer or fitting.
Will several lights cost the per-light range multiplied by the count?
That provides only a rough comparison. Shared setup can reduce the unit cost, while new wiring, dimmers and difficult access add work. Ask for the complete room or property total.
