A practical example
Changing a bedroom light to a fan
The existing light position may offer a useful cable route, but it does not prove there is fan-rated support or suitable switching. Compare the chosen fan and installation together. The $350–$650 NSW supply-and-install reference assumes suitable existing wiring; extra support, a new position or a premium fan requires its own allowance.
An example scope for planning, not a completed Xcel job or a quotation.
What changes the cost?
Mounting support
A light fitting’s support may not be adequate for a moving fan. The ceiling structure and access need checking.
New controls and cable
Wall controls, remote receivers and a new switch location change the wiring. Concrete ceilings and limited roof access can require a different route.
Before you arrange the work
Room and fan selection
Choose a fan sized for the room, with suitable clearances and a control method that suits daily use. Check whether the selected model includes a light.
Replacing a light
A fan can sometimes use an existing lighting position, but the support and circuit must be assessed. Agree any patching or new wiring before work starts.
Sources and how to use these figures
We checked the linked published prices on 21 October 2026. Where a source explicitly excludes GST, the figures here add 10%. Where GST is not stated, the table says so. Some references cover NSW generally or a specific Sydney suburb; their scope is identified below. Any rounding is explained with the source. These are sourced ranges, not a statistically measured market average or a maximum price for complex work.

Common questions
Is fan supply included in every advertised installation price?
No. Some prices assume a customer-supplied fan. Ask for the total with the chosen model, controls and any support work.
Can a fan be installed in an apartment?
Often, subject to ceiling construction, wiring access and any relevant strata approval. Confirm these before buying the fan.
Why is a new fan position more expensive than a replacement?
A new position can need cable, a switch route and structural support. A replacement may reuse suitable wiring and mounting, but those must still be checked.
