Planning your job in Marrickville
Marrickville is one of the inner west’s largest suburbs, with Victorian and Federation houses, semis and terraces, many older walk-up apartment blocks and newer buildings near the station and along the main roads. Many homes date from the late 1800s and early 1900s, so ceramic fuses, rubber-insulated cabling, cramped meter boxes and circuits never meant for air conditioning or induction cooking are common. Marrickville Road is its main shopping street, lined with cafés, grocers, restaurants and small businesses.
Work around your property
Marrickville is in Inner West Council’s area, about 13 km from our base in Ryde. Parts of the suburb are in heritage conservation areas, which mainly affects visible changes at the front of a house. Businesses along Marrickville Road can book work outside trading hours, and work on apartment common property goes through the owners corporation. Every job starts with a free, written quote, with the price agreed before work begins.
Existing wiring and finishes
In older homes we check the condition of the existing wiring and switchboard before adding circuits, and plan cable routes that avoid damaging ornate ceilings, cornices and plaster walls where possible.

Your questions
Electrical questions in Marrickville
Our Marrickville house still has old rubber-insulated wiring. Do we have to rewire everything at once?
Not always. Rubber insulation becomes brittle and cracks with age, so we test each circuit and prioritise the worst. Some owners rewire in stages, starting with the circuits that test poorly and the switchboard, then doing the rest during a renovation when walls and ceilings are open. If testing shows the cabling is poor throughout, a full rewire is the safer choice, and we say so in the quote.
Can a ceiling fan go into the high ceiling of an older Marrickville house?
Usually. Victorian and Federation houses often have high ceilings, so the fan may need a longer drop rod to sit at a useful height. We fix it to the ceiling framing rather than the plaster, work around decorative roses and cornices, and run the cable through the roof space. Photos of the ceiling and the room’s height help us quote.
How is the price worked out?
The scope, fittings, condition of the existing wiring and access all affect the price. Our cost guides give Sydney market ranges to help you budget; they are not a quote for your property. Xcel Electrical provides a free written quote explaining the agreed work and price before it starts. If testing reveals further work, we explain the options before proceeding.
What access should I arrange for the visit?
Keep the work area and switchboard accessible, tell us about parking or locked gates, and arrange entry to any rooms involved. For an apartment or shared building, also check meter-room access, lift bookings and permitted work hours with the building manager. Confirm approval for work affecting common property.
Will the power need to be turned off?
Many electrical jobs require the affected circuit to be isolated while work is carried out. A switchboard job may interrupt power to the whole property. We explain the expected interruption when planning the work. Tell us about medical equipment, refrigeration, business operations or anything else that needs an uninterrupted supply so suitable arrangements can be made.
