Planning your job in Rozelle
Rozelle is one of Sydney’s older inner-west suburbs, with Victorian and Federation terraces, workers’ cottages and semis on narrow streets, much of it within heritage conservation areas, alongside apartment buildings of different ages. Darling Street is its main street, lined with shops, cafés and restaurants. In the older homes, ceramic fuses, rubber-insulated cabling and meter boxes squeezed onto the front of the house are common starting points.
Work around your property
Narrow frontages, shared walls and tight roof spaces shape how cable can be run, and parking can be limited, so tell us about access when you book. A renovation is the best time to rewire and upgrade the switchboard. Rozelle is in Inner West Council’s area, about 10 km from our base in Ryde. Businesses on Darling Street can book work outside trading hours, and every job starts with a free, written quote.
Existing wiring and finishes
In older homes we check the condition of the existing wiring and switchboard before adding circuits, and plan cable routes that avoid damaging ornate ceilings, cornices and plaster walls where possible.

Your questions
Electrical questions in Rozelle
Our Rozelle cottage still has ceramic fuses. Is a switchboard upgrade enough?
Sometimes, but we test the cabling first. Safety switches can trip repeatedly on old cable with worn insulation, so a new board alone may not be the whole answer in a house this age. If the cabling tests well, an upgrade with safety switches is a big improvement. If it doesn’t, we quote for rewiring the affected circuits too. Any change to the meter box at the front may also need to suit the council’s heritage controls.
Our café on Darling Street is in an older building with a flat upstairs. Can you add circuits for new equipment?
Usually. In older buildings the shop and the flat above can share a supply or a switchboard, so we work out what is connected where and how much capacity is left before adding a coffee machine, fridges or other equipment. If the supply or board is too small, we explain the upgrade options and costs. We can do the work before or after trading hours, and you’ll get a CCEW for the wiring.
How is the price worked out?
The scope, fittings, condition of the existing wiring and access all affect the price. Our cost guides give Sydney market ranges to help you budget; they are not a quote for your property. Xcel Electrical provides a free written quote explaining the agreed work and price before it starts. If testing reveals further work, we explain the options before proceeding.
What access should I arrange for the visit?
Keep the work area and switchboard accessible, tell us about parking or locked gates, and arrange entry to any rooms involved. For an apartment or shared building, also check meter-room access, lift bookings and permitted work hours with the building manager. Confirm approval for work affecting common property.
Will the power need to be turned off?
Many electrical jobs require the affected circuit to be isolated while work is carried out. A switchboard job may interrupt power to the whole property. We explain the expected interruption when planning the work. Tell us about medical equipment, refrigeration, business operations or anything else that needs an uninterrupted supply so suitable arrangements can be made.
