Planning your job in Hornsby
Hornsby is the main centre of Hornsby Shire, with the station, Westfield Hornsby and the shops, offices and apartment buildings that have grown around them. More of its homes are apartments than houses, while the streets further from the centre are mostly houses, some of them older homes on large blocks, and parts of the suburb back onto bushland, where some properties are mapped as bush fire prone land.
Work around your property
Apartment work ranges from repairs inside a unit to common property jobs, such as car park lighting, intercoms and EV charging, that the owners corporation arranges. In the houses, switchboard upgrades, extra safety switches and circuits for air conditioning are common. Shops, cafés and offices in the town centre can book work outside trading hours. Hornsby is about 11 km from our base in Ryde, and every job starts with a free, written quote.
Plan related jobs together
In established homes, related jobs such as new lights, extra power points and a switchboard upgrade can often be done in one visit. Tell us which rooms will be in use so we can plan the work around you.

Your questions
Electrical questions in Hornsby
Our shop is inside the Hornsby shopping centre. How do you work with centre management?
Shopping centres usually have their own rules for contractors: inductions, insurance details, approved work hours and fitout guidelines, and sometimes a centre-appointed electrician for anything beyond the tenancy. We get those requirements from centre management before quoting, do the work inside your tenancy outside trading hours where that’s required, and give you a CCEW and a record of the work for the centre’s files.
We’re renovating a Hornsby house on bush fire prone land. What does that mean for the electrical work?
The approval for your building work will usually include a bushfire attack level (BAL) and construction requirements, and anything fixed to the outside of the house, such as the meter box, external lights and conduit, should suit them. Send us the approval documents with your plans so we can allow for that. Inside the house, the electrical work is planned as it would be for any renovation.
How is the price worked out?
The scope, fittings, condition of the existing wiring and access all affect the price. Our cost guides give Sydney market ranges to help you budget; they are not a quote for your property. Xcel Electrical provides a free written quote explaining the agreed work and price before it starts. If testing reveals further work, we explain the options before proceeding.
What access should I arrange for the visit?
Keep the work area and switchboard accessible, tell us about parking or locked gates, and arrange entry to any rooms involved. For an apartment or shared building, also check meter-room access, lift bookings and permitted work hours with the building manager. Confirm approval for work affecting common property.
Will the power need to be turned off?
Many electrical jobs require the affected circuit to be isolated while work is carried out. A switchboard job may interrupt power to the whole property. We explain the expected interruption when planning the work. Tell us about medical equipment, refrigeration, business operations or anything else that needs an uninterrupted supply so suitable arrangements can be made.
