Planning your job in Glenhaven
Glenhaven is a quiet, semi-rural part of the Hills, made up mostly of houses on large blocks, some of them acreage-style properties, along with townhouse and villa developments and almost no apartments. Most homes are owner-occupied. Parts of the suburb back onto bushland, and some properties are mapped as bush fire prone land, which affects anything fixed to the outside of a house that is being built or renovated.
Work around your property
Large blocks mean long cable runs: power to sheds, workshops, gates and pool equipment, lighting along driveways, and sub-boards for outbuildings. Glenhaven is about 15 km from our base in Ryde, so it helps to send photos of the switchboard and the area when you ask for a quote. We check the board and the supply before adding load, and every job starts with a free, written quote with the price agreed before work begins.
Outdoor cable routes
On larger blocks with established gardens, outdoor lighting and power to sheds, studios or pools need cable routes planned around trees, paths and garden beds.

Your questions
Electrical questions in Glenhaven
Our Glenhaven property is near bushland. Should our firefighting pump run on mains power?
It’s risky to rely on it. Mains power is often lost during a bushfire, so pumps meant for firefighting are usually petrol or diesel, which keep working without the grid. For everyday pumps, sprinklers and outdoor equipment, we can install dedicated circuits with safety switch protection and outdoor-rated fittings positioned away from where leaves collect. If you’re building or renovating, tell us the bushfire attack level in your approval.
How do you get power to a shed well away from the house on a Glenhaven block?
Over long distances the cable has to be sized to avoid a voltage drop, so the run length matters as much as the load. Underground cable is laid at the depth the Wiring Rules require, with marker tape above it, and the route avoids driveways and tree roots where possible. A sub-board in the shed with its own safety switches is usually the neatest result. We check the main board can carry the extra load before quoting.
How is the price worked out?
The scope, fittings, condition of the existing wiring and access all affect the price. Our cost guides give Sydney market ranges to help you budget; they are not a quote for your property. Xcel Electrical provides a free written quote explaining the agreed work and price before it starts. If testing reveals further work, we explain the options before proceeding.
What access should I arrange for the visit?
Keep the work area and switchboard accessible, tell us about parking or locked gates, and arrange entry to any rooms involved. Mention restricted ceiling or underfloor access when enquiring; you do not need to enter these spaces yourself.
Will the power need to be turned off?
Many electrical jobs require the affected circuit to be isolated while work is carried out. A switchboard job may interrupt power to the whole property. We explain the expected interruption when planning the work. Tell us about medical equipment, refrigeration, business operations or anything else that needs an uninterrupted supply so suitable arrangements can be made.
