A practical example
Connecting a home office by Ethernet
Plan a run from the router or network switch to the desk and identify an accessible route. The $132–$220 per point reference covers a standard outlet run, not a new internet service or a complete network. Confirm cable specification, terminations, labelling and testing, plus who supplies and configures any new equipment.
An example scope for planning, not a completed Xcel job or a quotation.
What changes the cost?
Cable route and testing
The distance and route between the communications location and the outlet matter. Include termination, identification and testing when comparing quotations.
Network equipment
Cabling does not automatically include a router, switch or Wi-Fi access point. Confirm which devices are supplied and who configures them.
Before you arrange the work
Home offices and smart-home planning
Plan wired points for desks, televisions and access points before walls close. Fixed cabling and Wi-Fi serve different needs; neither alone guarantees the speed of the internet service.
Small office layouts
Allow for printers, meeting rooms and future desk positions. Ask for labelled points and a clear record of where each cable terminates.
See the ACMA advice on choosing a registered cabler.
Sources and how to use these figures
We checked the linked published prices on 21 October 2026. Where a source explicitly excludes GST, the figures here add 10%. Where GST is not stated, the table says so. Some references cover NSW generally or a specific Sydney suburb; their scope is identified below. Any rounding is explained with the source. These are sourced ranges, not a statistically measured market average or a maximum price for complex work.

Common questions
Will new data cabling make my internet plan faster?
It can improve the connection within the property, but the internet service, router and devices still limit performance.
Does electrical licensing alone cover communications cabling?
No. Communications cabling has separate ACMA registration requirements. Ask who will perform the work and for the applicable cabling documentation.
Is a new data point the same as a Wi-Fi upgrade?
No. A wired outlet provides a connection at its location. Wider wireless coverage may also need an access point, suitable placement, power and configuration, quoted separately.
