Planning your job in Artarmon
Artarmon has a large heritage conservation area of Federation and inter-war houses, and a high share of apartments, many of them older walk-up blocks, around the station and the shops on Hampden Road. In the period houses, the usual jobs are switchboard upgrades, safety switches and rewiring done with care for original plaster ceilings, cornices and joinery. In the walk-ups, small unit switchboards and limited supply capacity shape what can be added.
Work around your property
Artarmon is in Willoughby Council’s area, about 7 km from our base in Ryde. Shops, cafés and small offices around Hampden Road can book work outside trading hours, and work on apartment common property goes through the owners corporation. Every job starts with a free, written quote, and wiring work comes with a CCEW.
Meter rooms and shared access
In apartments, access to the switchboard, meter room and common property often goes through the building manager or owners corporation, so tell us how access works and whether approval is needed.

Your questions
Electrical questions in Artarmon
Can we install an EV charger at our Artarmon house in the heritage conservation area?
Usually. Chargers are normally fitted in a garage, carport or side driveway rather than on the front of the house, which keeps them out of the street view. The bigger question in an older house is often the switchboard and supply, which may need upgrading first. If any new meter box, conduit or equipment would be visible from the street, check with Willoughby Council. We quote after checking the supply.
Can downlights go into the original plaster ceilings of our Artarmon house?
They can, but it’s not always the best choice. Cutting holes in old plaster ceilings risks cracking, decorative ceilings can be spoiled, and downlights need clearance from roof insulation. Many owners of period homes choose pendants, wall lights or carefully placed fittings that suit the ceiling instead. We look at the ceiling and the roof space and explain the options before quoting.
How is the price worked out?
The scope, fittings, condition of the existing wiring and access all affect the price. Our cost guides give Sydney market ranges to help you budget; they are not a quote for your property. Xcel Electrical provides a free written quote explaining the agreed work and price before it starts. If testing reveals further work, we explain the options before proceeding.
What access should I arrange for the visit?
Keep the work area and switchboard accessible, tell us about parking or locked gates, and arrange entry to any rooms involved. For an apartment or shared building, also check meter-room access, lift bookings and permitted work hours with the building manager. Confirm approval for work affecting common property.
Will the power need to be turned off?
Many electrical jobs require the affected circuit to be isolated while work is carried out. A switchboard job may interrupt power to the whole property. We explain the expected interruption when planning the work. Tell us about medical equipment, refrigeration, business operations or anything else that needs an uninterrupted supply so suitable arrangements can be made.
