These are planning ranges from published trade sources, not Xcel Electrical prices or a guarantee that every job falls within a range. All amounts are in Australian dollars. Your written quote confirms the scope, equipment, labour, exclusions and GST before work starts.
Prices and what they cover
| Work | Planning range | Inclusions and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Hot-water thermostat replacement | $200–$400GST: included | Replace a compatible thermostat and test it. Diagnosis must confirm the fault; supply-circuit faults, tank replacement and plumbing are separate. Hot-water thermostat replacement: Price source |
| Hot-water heating element replacement | $250–$450GST: included | Published component-replacement range with testing. Confirm whether draining or other plumbing is needed and who handles it; Xcel’s scope is electrical work. Hot-water heating element replacement: Price source |

A practical example
The tank is sound but the water stays cold
If diagnosis identifies a compatible thermostat as the only failed component, $200–$400 is the published repair reference. A failed element has a separate $250–$450 range. Do not add both automatically: the fault, tank condition and any draining or plumbing requirements need to be established first.
An example scope for planning, not a completed Xcel job or a quotation.
What changes the cost?
Find the fault first
No hot water can result from a failed heating component, a supply fault or a problem elsewhere in the system. The symptom alone does not establish the repair.
System condition
Model, age, access and compatible parts affect the decision. A leaking or failing tank needs plumbing assessment rather than an assumed electrical fix.
Before you arrange the work
Electrical work and plumbing
Tell us whether the unit leaks, trips a circuit or simply does not heat. Electrical and plumbing work may need coordination, with each trade’s scope clear.
Repair versus replacement
A component repair can be reasonable when the rest of the unit is serviceable. If the tank is deteriorating, ask for replacement advice from the relevant hot-water specialist before committing to parts.
Sources and how to use these figures
We checked the linked published prices on 21 October 2026. Where a source explicitly excludes GST, the figures here add 10%. Where GST is not stated, the table says so. Some references cover NSW generally or a specific Sydney suburb; their scope is identified below. Any rounding is explained with the source. These are sourced ranges, not a statistically measured market average or a maximum price for complex work.
- Plumber Sydney — hot-water component repair ranges — Published Darling Point repair ranges including GST, with thermostat and heating-element work priced separately. Xcel covers electrical work; any plumbing must be separately arranged.
For the work included in Xcel’s service, see hot-water electrical work.
Common questions
Does Xcel replace the entire hot-water system?
This service covers the electrical side. Tank replacement, pipework, valves and gas work are not included.
Can I reset the hot-water circuit repeatedly?
Repeated tripping needs assessment. Stop using faulty equipment and seek electrical advice rather than continually resetting it.
Do both the thermostat and element need replacing together?
Not necessarily. Testing should identify the failed component. Ask whether the proposed repair includes one part or both and whether separate plumbing or a return visit is required.
