Understand the scope first

Full rewire, partial rewire or renovation wiring?

A home’s age alone does not tell you whether every circuit needs replacing. Start with an assessment of the wiring, existing protection and the work you are planning.

A repair, partial rewire or full rewire can have very different access and disruption requirements. We explain the proposed work so you can plan the job before it begins.

  • Full home rewiring

Plan replacement wiring across the home, including the agreed circuits, points and associated electrical work.

  • Partial rewiring

Address selected areas or circuits where the assessment supports a limited scope.

  • Renovations and extensions

Coordinate wiring with the changed layout, new equipment and the builder’s access and finishing stages.

  • Associated switchboard work

Review circuit protection and capacity alongside the wiring scope, with required changes included in the quote.

Your property

Planning the work in Henley

Homes in Henley include established houses and attached homes. A previous renovation does not establish the condition or capacity of the wiring.

Test first, then plan the stages

Roof and subfloor access can reduce disturbance, while solid walls and decorative ceilings need another approach. The quote should identify cable routes, affected rooms and any separate making-good work.

Condition and intended use

Existing cable condition, faults, circuit arrangement and planned equipment help establish the scope. Repeated trips need investigation rather than an assumption that the entire house needs rewiring.

Access and making good

Roof, wall and underfloor access influence the installation. Confirm any openings, patching, painting and coordination with other trades before work starts.

Living in the property

Discuss occupancy, access and planned power interruptions. Whether work can be staged depends on the installation and the agreed scope.

Future layout

Consider the points, lighting and equipment you want before wiring is installed. Renovation plans help coordinate the work and avoid unnecessary later changes.

How it works

How a rewire is planned and carried out

  1. Assess the installation

Discuss existing problems and planned changes, then inspect the relevant wiring and electrical installation.

  2. Plan and quote

Agree full or partial scope, access, power interruptions and finishing responsibilities. Coordinate with the builder where renovations are underway.

  3. Rewire and hand over

Carry out the agreed work, test the installation and provide the relevant handover information and documentation.

Your questions

Home rewiring questions

Does an older house always need a full rewire?

No. A home’s age alone doesn’t tell you whether every circuit needs replacing. The condition of the cable, the existing protection, any faults and the changes you’re planning decide the work. An assessment may point to a repair, a few circuits or a more extensive replacement.

Signs worth having checked include rubber- or cloth-insulated cable, ceramic fuses, scorch marks, and lights or breakers that flicker or trip without an obvious cause. We explain what we find before recommending a scope.

How much does rewiring a house cost in Sydney?

Rewiring a three-bedroom home has a published Sydney planning range of $9,200–$23,000, including GST. Partial rewiring, occupied homes, difficult access and restoration need individually defined scopes. These are published planning ranges, not Xcel rates. We confirm a written quote for your property and agreed scope before work starts.

Can you rewire part of a home?

Yes, where the existing installation and your plans allow it. A partial rewire might cover a kitchen and bathroom being renovated, an extension, or a set of circuits with faults.

The quote should name the circuits and areas being rewired and any associated work, such as switchboard changes, so you know what is and isn’t included. Parts of the home that aren’t rewired keep their existing wiring, so we tell you about anything we notice there. Our guide to electrical planning for home renovations covers what to decide before the walls are closed.

Will I need to move out?

It depends on the scope, access and how long the power needs to be off. A partial rewire can often be worked around the household, while a full rewire can mean longer power interruptions and work in every room.

Tell us who lives in the home and about any essential equipment, such as fridges or medical devices. We discuss staging and power interruptions when we plan the job, but staging can’t be promised before the work is assessed.

Does the quote include plastering and painting?

Check the quote. Rewiring usually means some openings in walls or ceilings, and making good may be handled by a plasterer, a painter or your builder, depending on the job.

During a renovation, the builder often handles patching and painting after the electrical work. For a rewire in a finished home, ask what the quote includes, such as cutting, patching, cleaning up and painting. Settling this before work starts avoids surprises at the end of the job.

What access should I arrange for the visit?

Keep the work area and switchboard accessible, tell us about parking or locked gates, and arrange entry to any rooms involved. Mention restricted ceiling or underfloor access when enquiring; you do not need to enter these spaces yourself.
