Smoke alarm installation in Ashbury
Smoke alarm installation, replacement and testing, with compatible equipment and a clear record of the work for owners and property managers.

Alarms for your property
Which smoke alarms does your property need?
Smoke alarm installation starts with the property: its levels, the alarms already in place and how it’s used. Homes, rental properties and business premises can have different requirements, so we assess the particular building.
We install new alarms, interconnect them where the rules require it, such as in new homes, or where it suits the property, and test each one. We also test, clean and replace existing alarms for owners and property managers.

Your property
Planning the work in Ashbury
For older houses, terraces and cottages in Ashbury, access behind walls and above ceilings matters as much as the fitting or equipment being installed.
Identify the existing alarm system
A previous renovation may have left different alarm types or dates. We check the layout and compatibility rather than assuming a new alarm can simply replace any existing one.
The property and existing alarms
Tell us the number of storeys, the alarm locations and whether they are hardwired or interconnected. For a rental or strata property, confirm who approves the work and who keeps the inspection records. We assess the layout before recommending replacements or additional alarms.
Hardwired, battery or wireless
Hardwired alarms run on mains power with battery backup and cost more because they involve electrical wiring work. Battery and wireless interconnected alarms can suit some existing homes. The right choice depends on the building, the existing alarms and ceiling access.

Smoke alarm rules, costs and testing
What do NSW rules require for smoke alarms?
NSW homes need working smoke alarms on every level, positioned near sleeping areas. Fire and Rescue NSW also recommends alarms in bedrooms. Requirements for new buildings, interconnection and commercial premises depend on the building and the rules that apply to it.
We look at the property before recommending an installation and can explain what applies to your building. See Fire and Rescue NSW’s smoke alarm guidance for the current rules. Our smoke alarm cost guide explains installation pricing and what to confirm in a quote.
Do I need a licensed electrician to install smoke alarms?
For hardwired alarms, yes. They connect to your property’s electrical installation, and that work must be done by a licensed electrician. Incorrect wiring can create a fire or shock risk.
A battery-powered alarm doesn’t involve electrical wiring, but placement still matters. Alarms need to suit the layout, ceiling shape and sleeping areas, and interconnected alarms need testing to confirm they sound together. Landlords and property managers also receive a record of the work.
How much does smoke alarm installation cost?
Hardwired smoke alarm installation has a published Sydney range of $165–$275 per alarm, including GST. Alarm type, the number required, interconnection and wiring access determine the property total. These are published planning ranges, not Xcel rates. We confirm a written quote for your property and agreed scope before work starts.
How often should smoke alarms be tested and replaced?
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for testing, cleaning and replacement, and check the manufacture date on each alarm.
For rental properties, landlords must arrange annual checks and replace alarms within 10 years of manufacture, or sooner when the manufacturer specifies. Landlords remain responsible for working alarms and battery replacement. Tenants must report faults and may choose to replace a removable battery under the applicable rules.
See NSW Fair Trading’s rental smoke alarm guidance for timing, access and strata exceptions.
What access should I arrange for the visit?
Keep the work area and switchboard accessible, tell us about parking or locked gates, and arrange entry to any rooms involved. Mention restricted ceiling or underfloor access when enquiring; you do not need to enter these spaces yourself.
